Sumitra Das,23, an artisan belonging to the Kaivarta category residing in Mahuramukh village of Golaghat district in Assam pursued her education below the 8th standard and is now a full-time weaver who weaves for 4-6 hours a day. She does not weave during the months of March, June, July and August. She has seven family members. She started weaving at the age of 15. She learnt the skill of weaving from her mother. She has one loom in her household. Apart from weaving, Sumitra is also responsible for the livelihood of the family. She loves the environment of her village and the bonding of her community; however, according to her the quality of living in the village can be improved by improving the income of weaving.
